Feedback please - new features for next minor release version

Here are the list of features and enhancements being considered for a new minor release:

    1. 'Nudging' (moving) objects with cursor keys when in edit mode.
    2. Object layering control (for non-interactive objects).
    3. Addition of a button or menu item to provide an 'undo' action (currently only availble as CTRL/Z).
    4. Remove javascript code from Publish Standalone.
    5. When making gap fill content, force addition of a 'correct' item before allowing exit.
    6. Add support for .png graphics, with support for transparency.

I'd be interested whether anyone felt any of these were unnecessary, or whether there are higher priority issues for us to address.

Re: Feedback please - new features for next minor release version

    Hi,

I've yet to purchase Fuse Creator for my school but I have been experimenting with the demo version and I'm very impressed. For me a major feature that is missing is the ability to have the student's 'score' feed back into the VLE markbook (we use RM's Kaleidos LP and VLE). I'm not sure if this is a 'minor' feature upgrade but it is certainly something that I am looking for. In fact it would probably be the key feature that would help me 'sell' your product at my school. If teachers could create multimedia-rich resources and have the task results automatically recorded in their class markbooks I imagine they would be beating down my door to get their hands on a copy of the software!

Any news on when this feature will be available?

Kevin, glad you like the look of Fuse Creator and you make a good point re. interoperability with Markbook.

There are 2 enhancements that need to happen for this functionality to become available:
    1. Fuse Creator activities need to 'write' their scores into the VLE Interactions Database (via the SCORM runtime engine). This is planned for inclusion the next release (though was not something mentioned in my previous list).
    2. The VLE Markbook needs to be able to 'look' into this 'Interactions Database' and display fields appropriately. I know that the Kaleidos markbook does not currently do this, but it is on that team's roadmap.

We are also planning an interface so that an activity created in Fuse Creator can have its 'score passing' turned off (at activitiy design stage), in order to prevent the database being filled by activities for which scoring is inappropriate.

Hi Dave, Do you know if there are any plans to make Fuse able to create surveys? This would be an extremely useful feature as we are currently using Share Point and to be honest is not the most versatile of platforms. We use surveys as a way to keep track of what both the students and the teachers think or know about certain subjects etc. and it would be great to have a good solid platform for survey creation coupled with the presentation and ease of use that comes with Fuse. Thanks, Alex Burgess

Dear Alex,  Thanks for your comments.

As things stand, survey support is not currently planned for the upcoming release.  We do however maintain a list of features that our users have requested, and that helps to inform our planning of future releases.

It would be great if you could provide some more detail about the exact functionality you require e.g. are you more interested in the delivery of the survey, or the analysis of the results?  If any other users would find it useful to Create surveys using Fuse Creator, we’d like to hear from you.

In the mean time, there are some free tools available which might help you such as SurveyMonkey (www.surveymonkey.com)

Less of a feature request, but more of a plea for better quality images. E.g- pics of real fruit and veg would be much better than the supplied clip art colection.

    Hi Paul

Clipart generally does tend to vary and is often not exactly what we are after for a given activity.  While it's good for putting together something very quickly, it can be more productive to source images from the internet or digital photos when planning an activity.

Creative Commons is an excellent resource for finding high-quality images and photos which are not subject to copyright and can be used freely!

How about the ability to record directly into Fuse rather than having to import it having recorded it in another piece of software?

    Hi,

This is a great idea and one that we are already researching.  So far we have not been able to identify a solution that would work for both our Mac and PC users, so the research is ongoing...

    Please keep the suggestions coming!

Re: Feedback please - new features for next minor release version

I have recently started using Fuse to prepare for a pilot that I am leading on in Warwickshire LA. 10 schools are involved in the pilot and will be using Fuse Creator for approx half a term, before producing case study materials and then possibly introducing Fuse to all schools in Warwickshire.

There are a couple of things I have found 'annoying' when working with Fuse and am sure teachers using the product will say the same thing!

    - Is there a possibility of a spell check button? This would be great for pupils using Fuse in particular

    - Gap fill - when writing a long piece of text and then going back and adding the gaps, it would be great if the options in the list were randomly generated.

I will keep going, and will let you know if there are any more things that I can suggest!

    Hi Kerry

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for uploading your 'Negative Numbers' activity.

All feedback is welcome and will help to inform what we decide to include in future versions of Fuse Creator.

Hope that your pilot goes well.

     Dave

I have just started using fuse and like how easy it is to use but a little limited, I'd like to see it develop and was wondering if you had thought of the following.

    Ability to:

Use conditional branching from question (ie. correct/incorrect answers)
Import of FLV video files (conversions to swf don't always produce good quality output, pluse easier downloading of clips from websites)
Addition of a reward system (ie ability to link to a playable flash game page)
Page contect animation (more like powerpoint)
    Ability to import powerpoint slides
Adding a time limit to pages

    Hi D

Thanks for your suggestions... glad that you're finding Fuse Creator easy to use. You'll be pleased to know that many of these features are on the roadmap for Fuse Creator. Please keep an eye out for updates about future releases (free upgrades for existing owners).

You should be able to build conditional branching into your activities using your existing version of Fuse Creator. Take a look at Section 5 of the Fuse Creator User Guide for help and guidance on how to set up simple branching sequences of pages. Using branching sequences allows your learners to take different routes through an activity based on their performance. Adding a feedback pop-up to each branch also enables you to adjust the feedback they receive according to their personal strengths and weaknesses.

Some more suggestions and a did you know ?

The Did you know..I was doing an experiment with an idea, I wanted to add a link to a website to a page and wondered if it could be done..so I tried entering the URL into a text box to see what would happen..well..IT WORKS..links to the website no problems..GREAT TO KNOW...

    Sugesstions:

    • On a comment screen would it be possible to add URL's for websites to point to revision materials
    • Could reports be improved so there are different layout options
    • Enhanced branching for multiple answers (going to more than 2 screens based on score)
    • Have a random question page type that pulls questions from a question bank
    • FLV video support
    • Ability to link to a flash based game as a reward at end of activity
    • URL linking object (graphic/text object that links to a website) - (The above works fine but could be better)

Re: Feedback please - new features for next minor release version

    Hi David

Thanks again for the new suggestions... from my perspective, it's great to get this kind of feedback.

In response, I thought it might be worth sharing the following:

You're right, Fuse Creator will allow you to use URLs in your activities... suspect that many teachers will find this really useful although there are certain restrictions in how they can be used. In particular, they won't work after you've published an activity unless it's run through a VLE. I'm not particularly technical, but apparently it's a Flash Security Setting issue... the bottom line is that, so long as you run your activities through Creator itself or through your VLE, then the URLs should remain active and you should be fine.

FLV video support is most definitely on our list of features for a future release... we've got some exciting ideas about how to make even better use of video in Fuse Creator but there are some technical issues to investigate, e.g. how FLVs will perform over a network.

It should be possible to extend up to 8 branches from a menu page and up to 3 branches from a scored activity page. These numbers were defined a while back and the intention was to strike a balance between flexibility and complexity... we wanted users to be able to make good use of the branching feature without allowing things to get overly complicated. Having said that, I'd really welcome feedback from any member of the community on this issue. If we find there's a demand amongst users, then we'll look into it.

Hope that this is of use... please keep your ideas coming in.

    Steve
